"Reconnect: Hong Kong-Malaysia Partnership" Webinar

The Commerce and Economic Development Bureau (CEDB) and the Ministry of International Trade and Industry of Malaysia jointly organised a webinar titled “Reconnect: Hong Kong-Malaysia Partnership” on 24 September 2020 to strengthen collaboration between the two places in a wide range of areas including trade, investment, economic co-operation, project financing and technology, etc.

More than 850 representatives from technology companies and start-ups, chambers of commerce, financial institutions, the professional services sector and businesses from Hong Kong, Malaysia and beyond had registered for the event, which explored means to capture business opportunities under the “new normal”, and promoted people-to-people bond. This is the third webinar of the series organised by the CEDB in this year, following the one held with Thailand at the end-June, and another one with Indonesia in mid-August.

The webinar began with welcoming remarks by Mr Edward Yau, Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development of the HKSAR Government, and the responding remarks by Dato’ Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali, Senior Minister of the Ministry of International Trade and Industry of Malaysia. It was then followed by a panel discussion under the theme of “Emerging Stronger with Closer Collaboration and Partnership” and an Q&A session. Moderated by Mr Denis Yip, Commissioner for Belt and Road of the HKSAR Government, the panel comprised business and start-up leaders from both places, including the President of the Chinese Manufacturers' Association of Hong Kong (CMA), Dr Dennis Ng; Co-Chairman and Co‑Chief Investment Officer of Value Partners Group, Dato’ Seri Cheah Cheng Hye; the Managing Director of SenseTime Hong Kong, Mr Shang Hailong; the Deputy Executive Director of the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC), Dr Patrick Lau; the Senior Director of the Exports Promotion and Market Access Division of the Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (MATRADE), Mr Abu Bakar Koyakutty; the Director of the Foreign Investment Promotion Division of the Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA), Mr Sikh Shamsul Ibrahim Sikh Abdul Majid; and the Chief Executive Officer of VTech Communications Ltd, Mr Andy Leung. Based on their areas of expertise, the panelists shared on how partnership could be built on the use of innovation and technology application in combating COVID-19 and addressing corresponding livelihood needs under the “new normal”, as well as professional partnership in investment, finance, manufacturing projects, business undertakings, and professional services, etc. The webinar concluded with closing remarks given by Secretary Yau and the Consul General of Malaysia, Hong Kong & Macau, Mr Yap Wei Sin.

The webinar was co-organised by the Consulate General of Malaysia in Hong Kong, the Economic and Trade Office in Jakarta, HKTDC, CMA, and supported by Invest Hong Kong, MATRADE and MIDA.
